“Honor the Baby Ceremony”

The Sto:lo Nation’s Early childhood Programs: Aboriginal Head start and Mission Aboriginal Family Place offer an annual “ Honor Our Baby Ceremony. This year’s ceremony was held November 19, 2009 at Tzeachten Hall. This ceremony involved children ages newborn to one years of age. We made this a Family Affair, which involved; parents, older siblings and extended family. In total there were ten babies honored. We received an excellent variety of healthy foods catered by Al Jimmie and his family.

Ritchie Seward was our MC for this special Ceremony. As, the staff blanketed our MC, he asked that everyone in attendance to be a witness to this ceremony. The infants were covered, with a scarf and shawl or blanket; that included a label with the Sto:lo Nation logo and their name. He explained how important the role as parents/ caregivers/ grandparents/ teachers is in providing our children with a good education, as they are “Our Future Leaders.” As the babies were ready, they were walked around by their parents and received an Honor song by Ritchie Seward.

In closing, a prayer song was presented and give- aways were handed out to the participants.

As, this was NAAW, we invited Mike Pentz, Addictions Prevention Counselor to do a presentation for our parents/ caregivers. He presented the families with bags, caps, magnets and pens, pamphlets and information for our families.  Thank you, Mike for your generosity.
